The fifth wave of the epidemic broke out in Hong Kong since early February, with more than 10,000 confirmed cases in the community in a single day.

Seeing that confirmed cases began to appear in the student dormitory, CityU immediately launched a series of anti-epidemic measures to protect students, such as setting up isolation layers in the dormitory, providing sufficient food and drug support for confirmed and quarantined students, and sending thoughtful epidemic prevention kits.

After the rapid response of the city to the epidemic, the number of cases in the student dormitory has been successfully reduced to zero at the beginning of April, and we will work together to overcome the difficult epidemic.

Diagnosed Residents: Sufficient Meal and Drug Support, Daily Care of Wardens to Relieve Anxiety

CityU alumni Le Auditorium dormitory tutor and third-year local student of the Department of Economics and Finance, Chung Chun-hsuan (Ormond), was unfortunately diagnosed in early March. Ormond said that the initial symptoms were severe, including fever, asthma, and cough, which made him very nervous and overwhelmed. .

He immediately notified the dormitory and went to the hospital for testing. The waiting time was as long as 5 or 6 hours.

During this period, the dormitory also continued to pay attention to his condition until late at night.

"The dormitory let me know that even if I was in the dormitory, someone cared and took care of me, I felt much more at ease with him." Afterwards, Ormond was arranged by the university to live in the dormitory isolation floor. In addition to food and drug support, there was also a special person delivering food to the dormitory. outside the room.

"I remember that on the first day I lived in the isolation floor, I received a greeting card prepared by the school. The card was full of isolation instructions, how to make the body recover faster, and also included vitamin C granules. I felt very warm; He cares about my situation every day and asks me what I need, whether I have enough water and medicine? My symptoms are different every day. One day I felt a sore throat, so he immediately bought me throat lozenges, which made me feel so relieved and mentally supported. ”

In the face of the epidemic, Ormond pointed out that the information and guidance provided by the school are very clear, and the sufficient supplies and dietary support during the isolation period reassures the family.

Ormond believes staying in dormitory isolation also avoids the risk of infecting family members.

"The university responded quickly and updated information in a timely manner. In the early days of the epidemic, students were very nervous, but after learning that the university implemented measures to protect live-in students and reduce the risk of infection, everyone eased their concerns."

Ormond was notified while in quarantine that there was an opportunity to be transferred to a community isolation centre.

The university then had the kit ready within an hour.

"The school is good. I was worried about the meal after I was sent to the isolation camp, so I prepared a large bag of dry food, Pocari and throat lozenges for me." Fortunately, Ormond was able to stay in the dormitory to complete the isolation.

The dormitory quickly launched a number of anti-epidemic measures "self-rescue", set up isolation layers, information and material support teams to send greeting cards to cheer for students

Director of the Student Dormitory Office Dr. Lin Jian (Wilson) said that due to the outbreak of the epidemic, the university quickly formulated a number of measures to respond and implemented them in stages.

After the first confirmed case occurred in the City Student Dormitory on February 8, the dormitory immediately notified the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) and reported the student's activity route so that the university could thoroughly disinfect the floor and places they had visited as soon as possible. Notify the Department of Health and arrange the relevant students to the emergency room to wait for the arrangement of the authorities.

However, the community epidemic is serious, the isolation measures are insufficient, the medical system is on the verge of "burst", and the waiting time for confirmed and close contacts is too long.

Under the leadership of the Vice-President (Student Affairs) Professor Chen Hanfu, the student dormitory has launched different "self-help" plans from February 9: Associate Vice-President (Student Affairs) Professor Lo Tier-wing established the "Dormitory Fifth Wave Response Task Force" to arrange for students to retire Each dormitory is divided into isolation layers, and materials and psychological support are provided for the isolated students.

"The dormitory was filled with nearly 3,700 people at the time. We encouraged about 1,500 students to choose to leave the dormitory through various measures, so that each dormitory could be emptied from the first to third floors for self-isolation purposes in the shortest time. At the same time, an information integration team was set up. Responsible for closely monitoring the latest government guidelines and testing methods every day, and integrating the information to adjust epidemic prevention measures.” Wilson said, “It is due to the fact that President Kwok Wei has established the City University Emergency Response Team in the early stage of the epidemic. The management meets daily. Follow up the situation inside and outside the school to ensure that clear information is released in a timely manner to effectively reduce the panic of students. The dormitories also make concerted efforts to contact relevant students every day to understand their needs, always pay attention to comfort the students’ emotions and provide counseling.”

After arranging quarantine for confirmed residents and close contacts, the first issue is food and material support.

Faced with the shortage of supplies, the City University Emergency Response Team mobilized to collect quick test kits everywhere, and even tested a total of 150 students in one of the dormitories, and successfully identified several invisible carriers to prevent the outbreak of the epidemic in the dormitory.

In addition, the dormitory cafeteria has also remained in operation to cater for the three meals a day of the quarantined students.

If there are takeaways that need to be delivered upstairs, they will be handed over to the dedicated security and cleaning team hired by the university to put on protective clothing and deliver the meals to the door of the room where the students are isolated.

"In addition to the food supply, we also sent an epidemic prevention package with vitamin pills and fruits. The package even included a heartfelt card with thoughtful information such as post-illness conditioning and epidemic prevention arrangements. We hope to cheer students up. We also provide students in need. Throat lozenges and fever needles. If they have doubts about symptoms, they can use the online consultation service of the school clinic.” Wilson noted that the dormitories are well-arranged, and there is no need to worry about any living and eating issues during the quarantine period.

"Many students feel that the dormitory is safer than the residence. Because the isolation room has a separate bathroom, compared to staying at home and sharing with family members, if they are "successful", they will be trapped in a beast fight. At home, I feel even more helpless, and with the support of the dormitory and the daily communication and care of the dormitory, I can feel more at ease.”

Dr. Lin Jian, Director of the Student Dormitory Office.

The student dormitory will send a card to the students who are diagnosed and quarantined.

CityU has set up a dedicated cleaning team to reduce the risk of transmission in the dormitory.

Wilson described the anti-epidemic work in the past month as gathering various positions in the university to "build a tent", emphasizing that student safety is the primary consideration of CityU, and with the dormitory and the school's "general mobilization" to fight the epidemic, it has successfully built a strong for 2,000 live-in students protective cover.

Relevant university staff stayed behind every day until the early hours to support students. Although they were deeply stressed, they still worked hard: "CityU responded to the epidemic with teamwork and high vigilance. With the mutual support of the management and front-line staff, we went out to find Let’s help ourselves together. As long as our classmates need it, we will try our best to solve it for them.”

Institutions donate free anti-epidemic materials to support student dormitories

The epidemic has been repeated, and the dormitory's epidemic prevention work has not been relaxed.

The Chairman of the Hong Kong-Guangzhou Youth Federation (YGH) recently visited CityU Dormitory to learn about its series of anti-epidemic measures, and donated 66,000 masks and 800 sets of COVID-19 testing kits to CityU Dormitory, which were distributed to 2,000 residents free of charge.

Supplies have been distributed in dormitories to provide support for local and non-local residents.
