Numerous German companies are in favor of a raw materials embargo against Russia.

Others warn against a quick stop.

Berlin – According to a representative survey, more than 40 percent of companies in Germany support the demand for a raw materials embargo against Russia because of the Ukraine conflict*.

In the gas debate, however, the companies are divided, as the Süddeutsche Zeitung reports, citing the survey by the German Business Panel at the University of Mannheim.

36 percent of the companies therefore see an import stop for Russian gas negatively.

Overall, according to the report, the mood in German companies has deteriorated dramatically since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.

Four out of five companies see themselves as significantly affected by the war.

Embargo against Russia: disagreement in the gas debate

The German Business Panel regularly surveys thousands of companies.

In March, more than 60 percent of the companies surveyed said they supported the sanctions against Russia.

The concern about the shortage of Russian gas coincides with the statements made by the head of the Federal Network Agency, Klaus Müller.

He worries about the low levels in the German gas storage facilities.

In the event of a possible gas embargo or delivery stops by Russia, Germany would only be able to get the current quantities and purchased liquid gas until the end of summer or the beginning of autumn, said Müller in the RTL and ntv program “Frühstart”.

“But then the memory would be really empty.

And we wouldn't want that before winter." Economics Minister Robert Habeck also feared panic buying because of an immediate stop to gas deliveries from Russia*.

Ukraine conflict: Traffic light politicians for embargo against Russia

At the beginning of the month, the companies BASF and Siemens Energy warned of a boycott of Russian energy.

BASF boss Martin Brudermüller said that a freeze or prolonged failure of Russian gas and oil imports "could bring the German economy into its worst crisis since the end of the Second World War".

After a visit to Ukraine, three leading parliamentarians from the traffic light coalition also spoke out in favor of stopping Russian oil imports as quickly as possible and clear EU prospects for Ukraine.

“There should be a broad majority in favor of this in the Bundestag.

Germany must take on even more responsibility," says a joint statement by the chairmen of the Bundestag committees for foreign affairs, defense and Europe, Michael Roth (SPD), Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (FDP) and Anton Hofreiter (Greens). press agency is available.
