33 shots from a semi-automatic weapon - in the middle of rush hour: It is the worst shooting in the history of the New York subway.

A man opened fire on the passengers on Tuesday morning and detonated smoke bombs.

At least 23 people were injured, five of them seriously.

SPIEGEL reporter Marc Pitzke rode the subway in Brooklyn the day after.

Marc Pitzke, THE MIRROR

»The nervousness these days, that is, since Tuesday, has of course increased a lot.

You can feel it on their faces, you can feel it in the fact that people are really looking around, and I felt a bit like that too.

But, as you can see, life in the city goes on because most people can't afford not to ride the subway.

You already saw that during the pandemic.

- Even in the worst Corona crisis, people sat on the subways because they didn't have the money to take a taxi or an Uber or a car.

And that's why not much will change in principle, apart from the feeling and the mood here in the city.

The police have a stronger presence in the subway, but of course the transport company here is completely in deficit.

The subway is dilapidated and run down.

Alone in comparison to subways that are known in Europe or in other cities in America - and now to ensure more safety is a big problem.

Most cameras don't work.

The surveillance cameras are ancient, decades old.

There aren't enough cops, so that's quite a problem here."

Eyewitnesses said the man only stopped firing when his gun jammed.

Police later seized three more magazines, firecrackers and a jerry can.

Signs that the perpetrator had apparently planned even worse.

Marc Pitzke DER SPIEGEL

»At the same time, crime in New York has generally gotten worse since the pandemic: the number of shootings, gang disputes and gang wars has increased.

Homicides may have gone down, but everything else has gone up.

The feeling of insecurity was very strong in this city even before Tuesday.«

US President Biden has announced that he wants to take action against increasing gun violence.

Meanwhile, shares in gun manufacturers and ammunition suppliers are rising on Wall Street – gun owners are probably expecting stricter controls and stocking up on their arsenals.
