University of Halle concretizes savings plans: Subjects should be suspended

The savings plans of the Martin Luther University in Halle are taking shape.
On Wednesday, the Senate decided on the "suspension of matriculation" in some subjects for the coming winter semester.
Like the German Press Agency learned from Senate districts, the Bachelor's and Master's programs in the areas concerned Greek studies, pre-Islamic Orient, Indology and South Asian Studies.
Halle - The teaching degree in social studies, on the other hand, should remain in place.
Greek studies is the study of the language and literature of ancient Greek.
The Senate of Martin Luther University passed a massive austerity package last week.
Among other things, the decision provides for the cancellation of around 4,000 of around 21,000 study places, and 25 of the around 355 professorships are threatened.
In addition, entire courses of currently 260 offers could be eliminated.
In total, almost eight million euros are to be saved by 2030.

The reason for this is a desolate household.
In the past few years, there was usually a lack of around ten million euros.
In the current financial year there is already a gap of around 17 million euros.
The state government considers the situation to be homemade and insists on compliance with the financial framework.
According to the university rectorate, on the other hand, decades of underfunding in particular are contributing to the problems that have arisen.
It was said that one could not save at all.
In 2022, the state subsidy for the university without the medical faculty was 166 million euros.
The University Senate is an internal body.
It consists of the Rectorate, some professors, scientific staff, students and other employees of the university.
It serves to discuss topics that concern the university.
Although the Senate can decide on a savings plan, the final design must be made in consultation with the state government.
