There has been a dispute between Russia and Ukraine over a traditional stew for years.

A spokeswoman recently led to grotesque statements in the Ukraine conflict.

Munich — Bombed out cities, destroyed livelihoods, killed civilians.

Harrowing reports from the Ukraine conflict reach Germany every day.

Russia's President Putin's war of aggression on his Eastern European neighbors leaves many stunned and powerless.

In light of this, recent statements by the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry can seem grotesque and surreal.

Maria Zakharova commented on the "xenophobia", "Nazism" and "extremism" of the Ukrainians.

The 46-year-old identified these characteristics in the way Ukraine treats a traditional soup dish that the Ukrainians claim to be their own.

This is the soup called “borscht”.

This usually includes beetroot and white cabbage, although there are countless variations on the traditional stew.

In 2019, a dispute broke out between Russia and Ukraine as to whether the dish was of Russian or Ukrainian origin.

According to the MDR, an official Russian Twitter account had claimed the court for itself.

There it said: “Borschtsch is one of the most famous dishes in Russia”.

The reaction of Ukraine was not long in coming.

As also reported by the MDR, the Ukrainian star chef Ievgen Klopotenko launched an initiative to prevent “borscht” from being counted among Russian cuisine.

He founded an NGO called the Institute of Ukrainian Culture and sent volunteers across Ukraine in search of recipes.

Ukraine conflict: The handling of the drop shows the "xenophobia" of Ukraine

The aim was to have the soup stew recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of Ukraine.

They wanted to submit an application for this in March 2021.

Whether this happened has not reached Germany.

However, "borscht" is not on the list to this day (as of April 2022).

The spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry now took this history as an example of the "xenophobia" and "Nazism" of the Ukrainians.

Zakharova claimed that Russian cookbooks were banned in Ukraine.

It is impossible for Ukrainians that borscht should be shared and every housewife in every region can prepare the dish in her own way, no!

They didn't want to compromise.

We talk about that all the time.

About xenophobia, Nazism, extremism in all forms.”

The speaker's appearance earned a lot of ridicule on social networks.

For example, user and journalist Julian Hans wrote: "Of course there is no choice but to respond with bombs." Other users wondered whether Zakharova was drunk.

Ukraine Conflict: “Eat Borscht — Save Ukraine”

At the end of March, a Ukrainian star chef caused a sensation with the slogan “Eat borscht — save the Ukraine”.

As reported by

RTL

, the cook Olga Martynovska, who had fled to Prague from Ukraine with her six-year-old daughter, had come up with a special fundraiser.

The top chef cooked the traditional dish "borscht" at the farmer's market on Prague's Náplavka embankment.

The action was well received by passers-by.

According to RTL, a woman in line said: "I love borscht and I support the Ukrainian army because I believe they protect Europe and the whole world." (jb)
