Finland wants to speed up its plans to join NATO - is Russia already reacting?

A video circulating on the Internet is said to show the Russian military on the way to the Finnish border.

MOSCOW - A video released by the open source network OsintMon is said to show how the Russian military is bringing heavy war equipment - including two mobile missile systems K-300P Bastion - towards the Finnish border.

A reaction to Finland's plans to join NATO?

After Putin's warning against joining NATO: movement towards the Finnish border

Russian forces are said to have started moving military equipment near the town of Vyborg in the Leningrad region.

In the footage (not yet officially verified), a military convoy can be seen driving past a road sign reading Helsinki.

The missile system in the video is believed to be the K-300P Bastion Coastal Defense Missile System, capable of destroying almost anything from ships to aircraft carriers.

According to the British newspaper

Daily Mail

, the recordings are said to have been made just a few hours after Vladimir Putin * had warned the Finnish government against joining NATO.

Finland is already preparing for reactions from Russia in the event of NATO accession*.

Sweden and Finland want to coordinate closely

Meanwhile, the

Kyiv Independent

tweeted on Thursday morning that Russia was even threatening to station nuclear weapons in the Baltic States if Sweden and Finland joined NATO.

The medium quotes Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council.

Accordingly, Moscow must strengthen its defenses in the region - "there can no longer be any question of a nuclear-weapon-free Baltic".

Finland's NATO membership should be decided quickly: "Within weeks," said Marin

During her visit to Sweden a few days ago, Marin announced that she was expecting a decision on Finland's NATO membership "within a few weeks"*.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine changed everything.

Shortly thereafter, your government presented a comprehensive security analysis to the Riksdag in Helsinki, which is intended to serve as the basis for a parliamentary debate on the NATO question.

Parliament is due to deal with it as early as next week.

Without explicitly speaking out for or against an application for membership, Marin made it clear that there was no other security solution that was comparable to membership in the military alliance.

“NATO Article 5* offers comprehensive security.

NATO also has joint exercises and a common defense policy," said the Prime Minister.

There is no system that offers the same security guarantees as NATO.

Sweden is also toying with the idea of joining NATO, but Andersson is still hesitating

Sweden is also discussing joining NATO, although the discussion here is not as advanced as in Finland.

We are waiting for our own security policy assessment, which should be published by the end of May.

According to the newspaper Svenska Dagbladet

, the party leadership of Andersson's governing Social Democrats has already committed to joining after majority rejection in the past

.

It is reported that Andersson's goal is to submit the corresponding Swedish application at the NATO summit in Madrid at the end of June.

The head of government has not yet confirmed the report.

You have to analyze the situation to see what is best for Sweden's security and the population, she said when asked.

The Russian threats and warnings* also have doubts: Recently, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev also warned NATO against Sweden and Finland joining the military alliance: The two countries are now “officially opponents of Russia”, reports

Der Spiegel
