2022-04-14T13:48:07.770Z

The solution to the Bedouin takeover of the Negev? The government changes policy and focuses on adding localities instead of expanding them • Interior Minister Shaked: "In light of the security incidents, it is important to establish an urban continuum in the field."

Flowering the wilderness:

Contrary to past policies not to develop new settlements, but to thicken existing ones, the government is changing its position by 360 degrees: 14 new settlements will be established in the Negev.

For example, this week the government approved the proposal of Ministers Shaked and Elkin to establish the "Ir Ovot" settlement in the Arava, in Ma'ale Akaravim.

The decision came after the government approved the establishment of the new ultra-Orthodox city "Kasif" near Arad, the community settlement "Nitzana" and five settlements in Mevoot Arad.

In addition, seven new localities were added in the eastern Negev and the northern Negev.

The government is also discussing a directive to examine the establishment of five more new settlements and an employment area along the Beer Sheva-Dimona (Route 25) route, which are expected to include about 10,500 housing units. The government is considering a new urban locality, north of Lehavim. This is a large locality that is expected to contain about 15,000 housing units that will house about 80,000 people.

The Minister of the Interior, Ayelet Shaked: "We were like dreamers.

In less than a month, the Israeli government approved 14 new settlements in the Negev.

After years of non-construction policy, the Negev has been revived.

This is an important and strategic step of the first order.

Beyond the Zionist value of the seizure of state lands in the Negev, this has a very high security significance. The new localities will give a significant boost to the strengthening of the periphery and settlement in the Negev.

It is precisely at this time, in the face of all the security incidents, that the Israeli government establishes an urban continuum on the ground, stabs a stake, and begins to build Jewish settlements in the Negev. "

The Minister of Construction and Housing, Zeev Elkin: "The establishment of these settlements is the realization of an important Zionist vision for strengthening and settling the Negev.

The head of the Settlement Division at the World Zionist Organization, Yishai Merling: "In recent years, the Settlement Division, together with the Ministry of Housing, is leading the Ir Ovot project with the understanding that approving the plan will make the settlement a settlement anchor in an area thirsty for new residents and renewed growth." The first settler nucleus, which will settle in the city of Ovot on the basis of an existing master plan and its people will initially be housed in mobile buildings.

The Settlement Division will continue to assist as much as it can in promoting and strengthening the rural space of the State of Israel. "
