US pledges

another $800 million for arms to

Ukraine

8.30 a.m .:

In view of an expected large-scale offensive by Russia in eastern Ukraine, the European Union and the USA are also significantly increasing their military support for Kiev.

The United States plans to supply Ukraine with up to $800 million more in arms and ammunition, including artillery, armored vehicles and helicopters.

After talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, US President Joe Biden said the government in Washington would continue to equip Ukraine with the ability to defend itself.

The US government has already pledged or delivered weapons worth US$ 2.5 billion to Ukraine since the Russian war of aggression began in late February.

Since the beginning of last year, US aid for Kyiv has totaled around $3.2 billion.

Other NATO member states and allies have also supplied arms and equipment to Ukraine, including Britain and Germany.

The EU, in turn, only decided on Wednesday to release a further 500 million euros for arms deliveries to Kyiv.

Nehammer: Kyiv and Moscow know that war has to end at some point

6:10 a.m .:

After talks in Kiev and Moscow, Austria’s Chancellor Karl Nehammer still sees a small chance of negotiations between

Ukraine

and Russia.

"Both are in the logic of war, but both know that it has to end at some point," said the conservative politician of the German Press Agency and the Austrian news agency APA.

Before that, however, an escalation of the fighting in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donbass is to be feared.

"Both sides are preparing for a very intense and, from a human point of view, devastating battle."

Nehammer met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, becoming the first EU leader to visit Moscow since the Russian attack on Ukraine began.

Before that, the Chancellor was in Kyiv on Saturday, where he held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, among others.

Prime Minister of Saxony against delivery of heavy weapons to Kyiv

5:30 a.m .:

Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) has vehemently opposed the delivery of heavy weapons to Ukraine.

“We would cross a line if we deliver tanks or planes or even set up a no-fly zone.

This line must be maintained,” said Kretschmer of the “Rheinische Post”.

Germany is doing an enormous amount, but must not become a party to the war.

It shouldn't happen that you get drawn into a war.

»I see with great concern that currently stable guard rails of German foreign and security policy will be torn down very quickly.

Germany has so far refused to supply weapons to war regions, and with good reason,” said Kretschmer.

Together with the USA, Europe must increase the pressure "so that diplomacy gets the chance to end the conflict at the negotiating table," said the prime minister.

Australia imposes new sanctions on Russia

4:00 a.m .:

Australia is again expanding sanctions against Russia because of the war in Ukraine.

The government in Canberra has imposed “targeted financial sanctions” on 14 Russian state-owned companies that are of strategic and economic importance to Russia, Foreign Minister Marise Payne said on Thursday.

Among other things, the latest list includes "defense-related companies such as the transport company Kamaz as well as the shipping companies Sevmash and United Shipbuilding Corporation".

In addition to the electronics manufacturer Ruselectronics, which is responsible for the production of around 80 percent of all Russian electronic components, the Russian railways will also be sanctioned, it said.

»Need for thousands more teachers because of Ukrainian refugees«

3.50 a.m .:

According to the President of the Conference of Ministers of Education, Karin Prien (CDU), thousands of additional teachers are needed to integrate Ukrainian refugee children into the German school system.

Because of the Ukraine war, Germany had to prepare for up to 400,000 additional students, said the Schleswig-Holstein Minister of Education to the editorial network Germany (Thursday editions).

"We calculate that you need about 60 teachers for every 1,000 students," said Prien.

"So we would need 24,000 teachers for 400,000 children and young people from the Ukraine."
