The VW group remains under pressure in its sales due to a lack of electronic chips.
In March, too, the carmaker delivered almost a third fewer vehicles to customers, picking up on the weak opening months, according to figures published by VW on Thursday.
Wolfsburg - With 655,800 cars and commercial vehicles, the Wolfsburg-based company now delivered almost 1.9 million vehicles in the first quarter - 21.9 percent less than a year earlier.
The malaise ran through all important sales regions: In Western Europe, the group recorded a decline of 14.7 percent in the quarter, while deliveries in the most important individual market, China, fell by 23.9 percent.

With electric cars, VW can still score points.
In the months of January to March, VW got rid of a total of 99,100 fully electric vehicles - an increase of around two thirds.
In China, where the ramp-up has been sluggish for a long time, deliveries of battery-electric vehicles have quadrupled to 28,800 units.
