Andrij Melnyk is once again making headlines.

The Ukrainian ambassador sharply criticized ex-Chancellor Merkel.

Frankfurt/Berlin – The Ukrainian Ambassador Andriy Melnyk sharply criticized ex-Chancellor Angela Merkel for her Russia policy*.

"The Germans are almost obsessed with always finding something good in Russia," he said in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

“In Russia, brainwashing has been taking place on an industrial scale for eight years.

It has become a fascist state entity,” says Melnyk.

Regardless of Merkel's Russia policy, she was "almost blindly" trusted in Ukraine*.

“There was a huge amount of confidence in believing that she was better at assessing and managing things.

No one was as close to Putin* as she personally and the Germans, also as a mediator in the Normandy format.” Nevertheless, according to Melnyk, Merkel could have prevented the Ukraine war* with a different political course.

The government in Berlin has always known about the tense relationship between Russia and Ukraine - and "that Putin is not striving for an agreement, but for the annihilation" of Ukraine, the ambassador told the SZ.

Nevertheless, the Merkel government decided in 2015 in favor of Nord Stream 2 and against arms deliveries to Ukraine.

However, Melnyk not only criticized the old government, but also the new one.

According to Melnyk, too little was done for a long time.

In the meantime, the procedure is changing “slowly”: “But we are not yet so far that the politicians and the Chancellor are convinced that we can win.” Melnyk suggested that Chancellor Olaf Scholz be on site in Kyiv* could take a picture.

However, Scholz denied that on Wednesday after there had been a diplomatic affront to Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.*

Ambassador Melnyk was recently criticized for supporting the extreme right-wing Azov regiment in Ukraine.* (tu)
