Could Canada be the salvation in the event of a potential Russian gas supply halt?

At least that's what the boss of Quebec's largest gas company claims - but there's a catch.

Quebec - In recent years, dependency on Russian gas has never really been considered a serious problem.

With the start of the Ukraine War*, however, that changed abruptly.

About 55 percent of the gas consumed in Germany comes from Russia.

Many are in favor of stopping imports, but economic experts are certain that this could have serious consequences for German industry.

Ukraine-News: Company could supply Europe with 20 percent of Russian gas

Mario Levesque, CEO of Quebec's largest gas company, believes Canadian gas could help Germany and Europe out of this predicament.

In an interview with

focus.de

, he explains: "We can supply you with 20 percent of Russian gas in Europe - if necessary, for several years."

And when could it start?

"In the next 16 to 18 months we could start with that," says Levesque.

In addition, the gas boss makes it clear that Canadian gas would have to travel a much shorter route than that from Qatar.

“It is exactly 7412 nautical miles (nm) from Qatar to you in Wilhelmshaven.

From the Port of Quebec it's less than half – 3440 nm.” So Canadian gas would get where it needs to go faster.

In addition, the Canadians could deliver so-called compressed gas in containers, which is cheaper than liquid gas.

Gas from Quebec: Government wants to stop extraction of fossil fuels

But as great as this all sounds, there's a catch.

The state government of Quebec has issued a gas production freeze.

Because the fracking technique, with which the gas is extracted on site, is highly controversial.

Chemical substances are pressed into the earth to bring the gas to the surface.

Environmentalists are sounding the alarm here.

If the law is passed, fossil fuels will be gone for the time being.
