31 teachers and students from HKU Vocational College assigned two respite centers to take care of the elderly and help relieve the frontline manpower shortage

Lau Ai-shi, director-general of Kowloon Lok Sin Tong, which operates the temporary respite center, described the participation of teachers and students in the college as a "timely rain", which effectively solved the problem of manpower shortage.

Some school nurses said that they felt heartbroken when they saw a large number of elderly people infected with the epidemic. When they knew that they could help on the front line, they did not hesitate to participate in the internship in a respite care center for the elderly and gain practical experience before becoming a registered nurse.


Lok Sin Tong, Kowloon, has been commissioned by the SWD to set up two respite care centres for the elderly since March to take care of elderly patients who are initially diagnosed with novel coronavirus disease or mildly ill and referred by the HA.

The student nurses dispatched by the School of Professional and Continuing Education of the University of Hong Kong are already enrolled nurses and are now serving in the temporary elderly respite centres at Shek Kip Mei Park Sports Centre and Wanchai Harbour Road Sports Centre.

The faculty and student team of the college is on duty in two shifts every day, carrying out 8.5 hours of nursing practice per shift.

The on-site environment and medical equipment of the respite center are limited. Faculty tutors and student nurses will assist in following up the treatment plan of the doctor’s rounds when they are on duty during the “early shift”. Provide comprehensive health assessment and individualized care plan for the elderly to follow up the rehabilitation progress of the elderly, such as setting a timetable and assessment form for the elderly to turn around, and wound assessment reports, so that the nurses can provide wipes and shampoo according to the elderly's health conditions and other nursing services.

Nursing students expressed their hope that they could contribute to help reduce the burden of front-line medical care.

Lok Sin Tong: School Nurses Join Frontline to Solve Manpower Shortage

Student Nurse Dai: A large number of elderly suffer from heartache

Student Nursing Dai said that he knew that the fifth wave of the new crown epidemic was serious, and that he was heartbroken to see a large number of elderly infected with the epidemic.

He said that in addition to being a prospective registered nurse student, he is also an enrolled nurse. He did not hesitate to participate in the internship in a respite care center for the elderly, hoping to help reduce the burden of front-line medical care.

Dai pointed out that the elderly and children had been settled in their homes beforehand, and he reminded them of the importance of infection control to prepare for the internship and their families.

This internship allowed him to experience first-hand, as a registered nurse, the need to think critically and stay calm.
