Eintracht Frankfurt stunned Barcelona in a dramatic second leg to reach the Europa League semifinals on Thursday.

After 1-1 in the first leg, at one point, Frankfurt found themselves three goals ahead in the second leg.

Eintracht Frankfurt celebrates with fans after winning the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals.

A brace from Filip Kostić and a fine goal from Rafael Borré put the German team in command by surprise and it looked like they were on their way to a memorable victory until a frantic end of the match.

Barça scored twice in added time, with a magnificent goal from Sergio Busquets and a last-second penalty from Memphis Depay, but the Catalan club ran out of time to stage what would have been a spectacular comeback.

The result was celebrated by the thousands of Frankfurt faithful who made it to the stadium.

Only 5,000 tickets were officially allocated to the visiting team, but there seemed to be many more inside the iconic stadium and the Spanish press reported that at least 20,000 were able to attend the match.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta said he was "embarrassed" that so many Frankfurt fans managed to get in.

"It's a shame that we experienced this here today. It can't happen again. We have a lot of information about what has happened and we need time to review it," he told Barça TV.

“Then we will take measures, we will explain them and it will never happen again because it is outrageous.”

'We didn't play the best way'

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came close but failed to score against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Everything was looking very good for the Blaugrana.

The Catalan club seemed to have turned around after a difficult start to the season and were enjoying a run of 15 games without losing.

But the LaLiga side struggled to cope with quick counter-attacks from Frankfurt and will learn much from a match that highlighted areas in need of quick improvement.

Barca coach Xavi, also frustrated by the number of away fans in the stadium, said his team did not play well enough in the two games.

"We tried to have some heroism at the end, but it wasn't enough. We didn't play the best way," he told reporters.

"Actually, we weren't good tonight. They played well on the counterattack and although their second goal was a fantastic goal, it was due to a very silly mistake on our part."

Frankfurt, currently ninth in the Bundesliga, will now play West Ham in the semi-finals after the Hammers reached the quarter-finals of a European competition for the first time in 46 years.
