A third of the dead are guides

About a third of the dead on Everest are Nepalese guides and porters, a figure which testifies to the risk run by the hundreds of mountaineers who dream of reaching the summit located at 8848 meters above sea level.

Most of them use at least one guide, but for each expedition they are the ones who make several perilous journeys to transport the tents, food and oxygen cylinders to the high altitude camps.

Home to eight of the world's tallest peaks, Nepal welcomes hundreds of adventurers during the spring climbing season, when temperatures are mild and winds are generally calm.

The country only reopened its peaks to mountaineers last year after the pandemic halted activity in 2020. The Nepalese government has already issued 689 permits for the season, including 250 for Everest.
