A man was arrested in New Jersey for attempted murder on Wednesday accused of repeatedly running over a woman in an apparent fit of road rage after a minor crash.

Surveillance video obtained by the NBC affiliate station in New York recorded the victim escaping from the vehicle before being hit.

She is hospitalized in critical condition although her condition is stable, according to the Union County Attorney's Office, located next to New York's Staten Island.

The suspect has been identified as Vincent Jean, 56, and is in prison charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and other crimes, according to a statement from authorities.

The Prosecutor's Office believes that he ran over the woman twice, once while fleeing and once when she was already injured on the ground, deliberately backing up, he said, to hit her again.

The incident took place Tuesday morning after a minor crash in the Elizabeth area involving Jean and the 23-year-old woman.

The NBC station in New York said that neighbors saw Jean driving backwards down a one-way street, apparently to avoid traffic at that hour,

when he collided with the woman's vehicle.

When Jean tried to walk away without stopping to see the consequences of her actions, the woman began to photograph her vehicle, according to the prosecutor's account.

"At that point, the suspect drove her car directly toward the victim and she began to run onto the lawn to avoid being hit," authorities added.

In the video, Jean's silver-colored truck can be seen following her through the yard, and the woman is seen falling before the car hits her.

"How can you do a thing like that?" the neighbor whose surveillance camera captured the incident, who has not been identified, told NBC.

Jean then fled the area, according to the prosecution, but a police patrol found him that same morning sitting in his car and parked on a nearby street.

He was now being held in the county jail awaiting his court appearance.
