Multiple cultural events organized by the branch of the Arab Writers Union in As-Suwayda today in celebration of the Independence Day, which included the opening of libraries, poetry festivals, honoring cultural figures, and a visit to the tomb of the commander-in-chief of the Great Syrian Revolution, the Mujahid Sultan al-Atrash.

The activities began with the opening of a library for the Union in the Central Prison School in As-Suwayda, accompanied by a poetry festival on the prison theater, in which the assistant provincial police chief, Brigadier General Muhammad Zidan, members of the Executive Office of the Arab Writers Union, Dr. Jihad Bekfaloni and Riyad Tabra, and members of the sub-office in Sweida, Dr. Fayez Ezzedine and Farhan Al-Khatib, participated in it. It included poems She sang the love of the homeland and the epics of the evacuation, which came as a harvest of the solidarity of the Syrians and their heroic exploits.

The head of the Suwayda Central Prison branch, Brigadier Zain al-Abidin Muhammad, explained that the opening of the library is one of the fruits of the memorandum of understanding signed between the Ministry of Interior and the Writers Union, based on the ministry’s keenness to transform prisons into reform and rehabilitation institutions and raise the level of culture, education and awareness among the inmates to return to their social lives after their release as good individuals. They contribute to nation building.

For his part, member of the Board of Directors of the Association for the Care of Prisoners in Sweida, Akram Nasr, said that the opening of the Union Library is consistent and integrated with the efforts and role of the association and the concerned authorities in achieving social and cultural care for inmates.

The Union also opened a rural library in the village of Walgha in response to an initiative from the civil society, which included reciting patriotic poems and dance performances for children, in the presence of official, civil and cultural events.

One of the villagers, Adel Al-Hakim, who was honored by the Writers Union as one of the initiators of the establishment of the library, noted the state of cooperation between the villagers, especially the youth, to equip and establish the library, emphasizing the importance of reading and culture in the community.

After that, the Writers Union honored the retired teacher and mentor Radwan Eid, a cultural figure in the village of Majdal, who established a private library in his home containing more than three thousand books and made them available for loan in appreciation of his initiative and efforts to enhance the cultural situation and encourage reading.

Eid expressed his thanks for the union's initiative, indicating that it is not possible to confront the backward and obscurantist ideology only with science and thought in parallel with the sacrifices made by the Syrian Arab Army to defeat terrorism.

The activities concluded with a visit to the tomb of the commander-in-chief of the Great Syrian Revolution Sultan al-Atrash in the edifice of the revolution in the town of al-Qurayya and the reading of al-Fatihah for his pure soul and the souls of his fellow mujahideen who made their heroism, sacrifices and stances the glory of liberation.

In a statement to SANA, a member of the Executive Office of the Writers Union, Dr. Jihad Bekfaloni, indicated that the Union has started a project to create libraries in villages and rural areas in cooperation with the civil society, pointing out that the opening of the library in the central prison in Suwayda allows each inmate to obtain a much-needed knowledge supplement, with the Union ready to publish The literary contributions of guests in his journals and periodicals.

For her part, Head of the Writers Union branch in Sweida, writer Wejdan Abu Mahmoud, stated that the activities come to devote and enhance the cultural situation in the governorate, as the opened libraries were initially supplied with about 500 books of various titles, and they will be provided successively with the latest publications and periodicals to form cultural and civilized radiation stations.
