The trailer for "The Devil and Father Amorth" (LD Entertainment)

The former Vatican's senior exorcist, who personally oversaw tens of thousands of demon-removing demon cases before he died in 2016, had one encounter that was so frightening that he inspired a series of Hollywood films, including "Summon the Evil One."

Father Gabriella Amort spent 30 years investigating cases of demon domination around the world and during his career claimed to have successfully performed more than 70,000 demon divorces - a process designed to eliminate the harmful effect of a demon infiltrating a person's body.

As a former soldier who fought the fascists in the partisan brigade during World War II, there were not many things that frightened him - except for one exceptional case.

In 1997 he said he met an Italian farmer who shouted curses at him in perfect English before spitting at him and attacking him - just like in the 1973 horror film The Exorcism.

Apparently the pastor managed to calm the "demon" with the help of prayer but that really was not the end of the case.

Catholic priest Marcello Stenzione documented what happened then in a book he published about Father Amort and wrote: "But then, screaming and howling, the demon burst and looked straight at him, drooling saliva from the mouth of the young man he had taken over."

In the book, "The Devil is Afraid of Me", it is claimed that then the farmer's body was gripped and he began to hover a meter high in the air for a few minutes before falling into a chair - then the devil probably announced exactly what day and time he would leave the man's body.

This scene was recreated in 2013 in the movie "Summon the Evil" and shows a quiet housewife possessed by the spirit of an evil witch.

"Do you know why the Devil is afraid of me? Because I'm uglier than he is."

How do you identify the devil?

Father Amort, who lacked any experience in exorcism before responding to the Holy See's request to assist Rome's exorcist, claimed that he agreed to accept the position only after a lengthy prayer at the end of which the devil told him he was too pure to be harmed.

Referring to the question of how to identify a devil, he noted many symptoms including spitting, vomiting of glass fragments or pieces of iron and even petals of roses.

In one case, he claimed that a woman spat on him pieces of a radio transistor after vomiting it.

The pastor also said that many of the people who were taken over by demons had supernatural powers - including an 11-year-old boy who fought three cops and a 10-year-old who raised a huge and massive table.

He further claimed that the people he managed to "rescue" often spoke English while possessed, while even Italians he met while apparently under Satan's control were "shouting threats and cursing" in English even though they did not know a word of the language.

He claimed that Satan hated to hear Latin and he preferred to speak in modern human language.

Amort emphasized on various occasions the necessity of believing that demons are real beings, not a metaphor for human impulses, and in this regard quoted the Gospel according to Lucas IX: " "He who does not believe in Satan - denies the gospel."

In 1999, he opposed the new exorcism-approved bylaws approved by the Vatican, which replaced the rules of the ceremony ratified in 1614, and recommended that doctors and psychiatrists be consulted first.

However, in May 2016 (shortly before his death) he said he supports consulting medical professionals because most of the people he has seen in his career who are claimed to be possessed percent have suffered from mental stress or health issues.

He said, "Only one or two, at most, out of every hundred" were really under the control of demons.
