Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin considered Washington's campaign and actions to get Russia out of the United Nations Human Rights Council as a theater of the absurd.

"The United States, which considers itself the locomotive of democracy and human rights, does not itself meet the official criteria for membership in the Human Rights Council," Vershinin was quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency as saying.

Vershinin pointed out that out of 12 major international human rights conventions and optional protocols, only five have been ratified by the US side, noting that despite its calls for gender equality, Washington, for example, has not yet joined the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.

He pointed out that the manifestations of racism and racial discrimination in the United States took a systematic and structural character, as America acted as an aggressor country and unleashed wars in all regions of the world. He wondered... Have Americans been held responsible for the numerous violations of human rights and international humanitarian law in Syria, Iraq, Libya and Yugoslavia... Vershinin explained A country with such a track record of violating human rights is now recommending which member should remain on the Human Rights Council, he said.. “At the end of the day, the actions of the United States in the Council are absurd and it is difficult to call this situation another way.”

Earlier, the United Nations General Assembly voted to suspend Russia's membership in the Human Rights Council due to the events in Ukraine. In response, Moscow announced its withdrawal from the Council.
