A new US study revealed that some personality traits may play an important role in determining the possibility of people developing mild cognitive impairment later in life.

CNN quoted the study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, as saying that those who are more aware and open to others avoid developing mild cognitive impairment earlier, while those with higher levels of neuroticism have an increased risk of cognitive decline.

In turn, Tomiko Yoneda, the study's lead author, said: "The personality traits reflect relatively fixed patterns of thinking and behavior that may cumulatively affect the practice of healthy and unhealthy behaviors and thinking patterns during the life path of the individual, noting that the accumulation of experiences during the life path may contribute to exposure to diseases or disorders." Specific conditions such as mild cognitive impairment or cause individual variances in the ability to tolerate age-related neurological changes.

About 2,000 people from Chicago participated in the study and examined the role played by three main personality traits in how people overcome cognitive decline later in life: conscientiousness, openness to others, and neuroticism.

The study pointed out that those who are more extroverted and have a greater social trait may live an additional year free of dementia, and this enhances their ability to restore normal cognitive function after receiving a previous diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment, perhaps due to the benefits of socialization, while the higher the levels of neuroticism, the more risk of cognitive decline.

Previous research has shown that people who are more open to experiences, more conscientious and less neurotic, do better cognitively on tests and experience lower cognitive decline over time.
