Two of the gunshot victims were seriously injured in the shooting at the Columbiana Center mall in Columbia, the capital city of South Carolina.

"We don't think this was random," he said.

“We believe that the individuals who were armed knew each other.

Some kind of conflict occurred, and this resulted in shots being fired.”

Columbia police said their officers responded to a shooting at the Columbiana Center around 2:30 p.m. and evacuated the mall to "get people to safety."

Holbrook testified that the person who initially called to report the shooting said that

shots were being fired outside the Gap store

.

After that, multiple 911 calls were received, he said.

Personnel from local Sheriff's departments, the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the call.

Officers searched the mall for the injured, Holbrook said, and were in the process of doing a second, more comprehensive search of the facility.

Investigators reviewed security video to determine if the three people being held for questioning, whom Holbrook described as "persons of interest," were possible suspects or merely witnesses.

The Columbiana Center is approximately 10 miles (16 kilometers) from downtown Columbia, the capital of South Carolina.
