Florida Gov. Ron Desentis has signed a bill banning abortion after the 15th week of pregnancy.

In doing so, Florida joins other Republican-led states that have recently enacted similar laws.

"The law represents the most significant protection of life enacted in this country in a decade," Desentis said Thursday, signing the bill at the Evangelical Church in Kissimmee.

Republicans across the United States are pushing to impose new restrictions on abortions after the Supreme Court signaled it would uphold a Mississippi law banning abortions after the 15th week.

The court's decision, which is expected to be made in the summer, could weaken or completely overturn the historic 1973 Row v. Wade ruling that denied women a legal right to have an abortion.

The new Florida law, which goes into effect July 1, contains exceptions: if an abortion is necessary to save the mother’s life, prevent significant health damage or if the fetus has a fatal abnormal defect.

The law does not exempt cases where the pregnancy was caused as a result of rape or human trafficking, despite democratic attempts to change it.

Under current law, abortions in Florida are legal until the 24th week.

According to the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 2 percent of the 72,000 abortions reported to occur in Florida in 2019 were performed after the 15th week.

That same year, 2,256 abortions by residents outside of Florida were performed in the state.

If the Row v. Wade ruling is overturned, 26 states in the United States are likely to ban or severely restrict abortions, according to the Guttmacher Institute, which supports the right to abortion.

Similar laws restricting or prohibiting abortion have been enacted recently in Texas, Oklahoma and Arizona.
