It is the dream of many people to be an intern in a large commercial institution. Victo, an art girl, chose to go to a barber shop in Sham Shui Po and practice with Stanley, who has 19 years of hair cutting experience.

Just like the "student boy" of the hair salon, the interns also start from the bottom. Victo has to deal with cleaning the floor, answering the phone, hanging clothes for customers, etc. It seems like a "doll" job every day, but Victo learns how to do it from the hair stylist. Communicating with guests also influenced her imagination of her future work career.

Although the internship was not long, this experience allowed Victo to truly discover the other side of Sham Shui Po and the neighborhood outside the Wen Qing shop on Tai Nan Street.

Victo, who studied creative arts, became interested in the craft of hairstylists through an exhibition.

Victo said that at that time, the exhibition needed to use shredded paper to make a puppy. He found that it was not easy to create a sense of hierarchy when cutting paper, so he began to observe the techniques of different hair stylists.

Later, she noticed that in the "Heart Wave@Sham Shui Po" program, there was an option to go to the Neighbor Barbershop for a "mentoring-apprenticeship" work internship, so she began to participate.

Victo pointed out that he has been cut by his parents since he was a child. He only went to the barber shop once when he was about 7 years old, so he was not familiar with the internal environment and work, and he had "stage fright" at first.

"The most profound thing is that Stanley told me: you have to observe other barbers (barbers) serving customers." She never thought of becoming a barber, starting from sweeping the floor, cashier, folding clothes, observing the type of customers, observing The Barber culture in the area, during the internship from December last year to January this year, Victo experienced the busiest time for the hair salon before the Chinese New Year, "There are constant customers within 10 hours, we have to recognize the next customer. The side shirt, hang it up and walk politely and return to them... I already feel very busy doing this, but I can imagine how much concentration it will take for people who want to cut their hair."

During her internship, Victo (right in the back row) learned from the hair stylist how to communicate with clients, which also influenced her imagination of her future working career.

Looking forward to engaging in community art: more cordial

Victo's purpose of participating in "Heart Wave@Sham Shui Po" is clear, and she hopes to get to know the community better. She learned from the barber how to chat and interact with customers like friends. Every lunch time, she goes with her colleagues to the "Neighborhood Restaurant" "Dinner," In the past, I used to go to the cafe on Tai Nan Street and just look at the artworks. 𠵱 I know that people who work in Sham Shui Po usually go to eat while eating, and they also learn something about the ecology. It is also a sense of connection and intimacy with people.” This internship experience also influenced her future plans. From the past, she hoped to do art administrative work in a museum, and now she hopes to do more community art. Stick to the ground."

Stanley, the manager of Neighbor Barbershop, has 19 years of experience in hair cutting. He is committed to preserving the services and feelings of traditional Hong Kong barbershops. In addition to Kwun Tong, Sham Shui Po is also one of the alternatives in the old alternate livelihood area.

He said that Victo was relatively quiet at the beginning of the internship, but his work was organized and he would actively ask to learn new things.

As for how the "student" inherits the spirit of the barber, Stanley pointed out that both the intern and the apprentice must "start from the bottom", "There is no reason why a hairstylist only knows how to cut hair, but does not know how to communicate with others and take out garbage. Why am I not as good as the whole robot?"
