Clashes continue for the fourth day in cities across Sweden, against the backdrop of the burning of a Koran by an extremist right-wing organization that opposes immigration.

According to state media, three people were injured yesterday (Sunday) in the eastern city of Nursing, after police fired warning shots at protesters.

Vehicles were set on fire, and at least 17 people were arrested in the southern city of Malmo during a far-right rally.

The governments of Iran and Iraq summoned the Swedish representatives in protest of the burning of the Koran.

The Danish-Swedish extremist activist Rasmus Paloden, leader of the Danish far-right movement Stram Kurs (Hard Line), said he had burned the most sacred text of Islam and would do so again.

Paluden threatened to hold another rally in Northsping yesterday and protesters from both sides gathered there.

Local police said they fired warning shots after protesters attacked police, and three people were injured.

Police Chief Anders Thorenberg said in a statement that the protesters had shown indifference to police lives: "We have seen violent demonstrations in the past, but that is something else," he added.

This is not the first time that Stram Kurs' threats to burn the Koran have provoked violence in Sweden.

In 2020, protesters set fire to cars and shop windows in Malmö.

Paloden - who was jailed in Denmark for a month in 2020 for offenses including racism - tried to plan similar fires of Koran books in other European cities, including France and Belgium.
