A mandatory event can also be fun - 16 agricultural students who took part in the forestry competition in Weilheim as part of their training experienced this.

Weilheim

– According to Sebastian Utzschneider from the Office for Food, Agriculture and Forestry, the participants in the practical part of the forest competition, for which 17 agricultural students came to the tennis court on Maundy Thursday, “delivered a very good performance”.

It was the first competition after a two-year break due to the pandemic.

On the meadow next to the parking lot, the prospective farmers could show whether they could plant trees, and in a forest clearing nearby, sawing was done with a chainsaw.

Among other things, the execution of felling cuts and precision cuts was tested there.

Participation in the competition is a compulsory part of training to become a farmer, "but it's also fun", as Tobias Rappenglück states, because everything that was asked for was "doable".

"Forest work is dangerous if you can't do it"

The Weilheimer, who has previously attended several courses on safety regulations and protective equipment in order to prepare himself, has found that the training gives you “a lot of knowledge that can be used in practice”.

He emphasizes the importance of training: Forest work is "dangerous if you can't do it".

He will also apply what he has learned.

The family has a forest in Lichtenau, where they make timber and firewood for their own needs.

Kilian Pölt considers the preparation of the chainsaw for the competition to be particularly important.

"You can only work well with a really sharp saw that runs well," says Kohlgruber.

That's why he not only sharpened the chain, but also checked all the functions so that everything works in the competition.

He too will be able to use his skills in his own forest.

"Now the work is paying off again," he says, the wood price is good and firewood is also in demand.

Praise from the deputy governor

Lisa Stolp is one of the four women who took part in the competition.

She came to Weihenstephan from Uslar in Lower Saxony for her dual study program because she was "pulled into the mountains".

Now she is doing part of her training at a company in Bernried.

She doesn't know whether she will later need to use the chainsaw professionally, but "it also makes a lot of sense for oneself, you can do a lot with it".

You don't necessarily have to work in wood for this.

A hunter also needs the knowledge if he “wants to build his hide himself”.

Planting trees is important to her.

She was surprised "how strict the evaluation was when planting".

Deputy District Administrator Wolfgang Taffertshofer acknowledged the performance of the participants.

Forest work is an important task because the forest is of great cultural, social, economic and ecological importance.

Wood is now gaining more importance as a source of energy.

In practice, according to the head of the "Forests" department, Christine Achhammer, the participants were above average in a long-term comparison, but "not quite as perfect in theory".

The winner comes from Wessobrunn

Qurin Orterer (Wessobrunn) won ahead of Maximilian Bischof (Herrsching) and Kilian Pölt (Bad Kohlgrub).

The top three received a safety helmet as a prize, the other participants received something that, according to Achhammer, "we hope they will never need" - a small first-aid kit.

The other participants in the competition were Georg Adlwart (Antdorf), Johanna Greinwald (Seeshaupt), Eva Höck (Riegsee), Elias Lang (Wielenbach), Tobias Rappenglück (Weilheim), Korbinian Schägger (Seeshaupt), Thomas Schmölzl (Schöngeising), Thomas Schreyegg (Seefeld), Franziska Schuster (Wessobrunn), Valentin Sedlmayr (Herrsching), Lisa Stolp (Uslar, Northeim district), Thomas Weber (Wielenbach), Lorenz Weindel (Munich) and Raphael Wolf (Antdorf).
