The seizure of power by the military in Chad after the announcement of the death a year ago of President Idriss Déby Itno has made it possible to avoid an

"institutional vacuum"

, said the head of the junta on Tuesday in a speech to the Nation.

Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno was appointed head of a Transitional Military Council (CMT) made up of 15 generals, following the announcement on April 20, 2021 of the death of his father, Marshal Idriss Déby.

The former head of state, killed at the front against rebels, ruled the country with an iron fist for 30 years.

The CMT intervened

"to fill the institutional void following the disappearance of the President of the Republic (...) who fell while defending the motherland"

, declared Mahamat Idriss Déby in his speech.

Dressed in a military fatigues, the president of the transition, a 38-year-old 5-star general, affirmed that

"the initiated transition (...) is evolving satisfactorily"

while recognizing

"failures to be corrected".

As soon as he took power, the new strongman of N'Djamena dissolved Parliament, dismissed the government, repealed the Constitution while promising

"free and democratic elections"

after an 18-month transition, renewable once.

He appointed a civilian prime minister - who had already served under his father - as well as the 93 members of a National Transitional Council (CNT), which acts as a parliament.

He also promised an

"Inclusive National Dialogue"

open to

"all"

opposition, political and armed, which is due to open on May 10.

"As previously announced, the work of the Inclusive National Dialogue will begin on May 10 in N'Djamena"

, the capital of Chad, declared Mahamat Idriss Déby, despite the delays in Doha, Qatar, between the authorities and armed groups for the

“pre-dialogue”.

After the talks in Qatar, which were initially scheduled to begin on February 27 before finally opening on March 13, the authorities want the rebel groups, which have carried out numerous offensives in recent years, sometimes even to the gates of the presidential palace , participate in

“National dialogue”.

"This is a crucial meeting not to be missed, at the end of which, our dear and beautiful country will acquire lasting institutions that meet the deep and legitimate aspirations of the sovereign Chadian people"

, underlined the president of the CMT, claiming to have implemented an

“outstretched hand”

policy with opponents.
