In 1974, the two finalists for the presidential election, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing and François Mitterrand, disputed the
"monopoly of the heart"
of the French.
Pretty formula which has also been claimed to have played into the hands of the first, winner that year.
They each had their own vision of the country's future.
It was then project against project.
By voting, the voter adhered, more or less, to one or the other.
Almost fifty years later, the debate of their distant successors, this Wednesday evening, will not register at all in this "sentimental" register.
Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen will rather seek to cause as little rejection as possible.
It will be “rejection against rejection”.
Admittedly, the two candidates also embody two Frances that everything opposes.
But the lack of love - not to say hatred - inspired by political leaders today is such that people vote more to block than out of conviction.
