The Russian Foreign Ministry announced today the expulsion of a number of Austrian embassy employees in Moscow, in accordance with the principle of reciprocity.

The TASS news agency quoted the ministry as saying in a statement that it had summoned the Austrian ambassador in Moscow Werner Al-Mahffer and expressed to him its strong protest against Vienna's provocative decision to declare four Russian embassy employees persona non grata, adding, "The unfriendly Austrian move seriously damages bilateral relations." .

The statement indicated that the Austrian ambassador received a note from the Russian Foreign Ministry declaring that a number of Austrian embassy employees in Moscow were persona non grata, and gave them until the 24th of this month to leave the country.

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced earlier today the expulsion of a number of employees of the embassies of Belgium and the Netherlands in Moscow.
