Tensions on the Temple Mount: Emergency Discussion at the UN Security Council | Israel Today

Against the background of the escalation on the Temple Mount, the council will convene behind closed doors and without the presence of the Israeli and Palestinian delegations • Bennett: "The State of Israel will continue to preserve our capital, Jerusalem is open to all"

Today (Tuesday) at 17:00 Israel time, the UN Security Council will convene to discuss escalation on the Temple Mount. Norway, the United Arab Emirates, France, Ireland and China have convened the emergency meeting of the UN governing body in light of last week's tensions.

The UN envoy to the Middle East, Thor Winsland, will brief the representatives of the countries in a discussion that will be behind closed doors and without the presence of the Israeli and Palestinian delegations.

As you may recall, in recent days many countries have sharply criticized the Israeli government and its treatment of riots and disturbances on the Temple Mount.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Spadi last night (Monday) informed the parliament in his country that they "summoned the Israeli ambassador, who was not in Amman."

In Jordan, they also summoned the relations commissioner to clarify to him the clear message that condemns Israeli actions.

The Jordanian minister added, "If Israel does not stop the illegal measures and the violations, then it will be responsible for the explosion that will come."

The King of Jordan, Abdullah II, also referred to the sharp condemnation of the Foreign Ministry in the country, to events on the Temple Mount.

The king stressed "Israel's need to respect the status quo on the Temple Mount and stop all illegal and provocative measures that violate it."

Abdullah added that maintaining total calm required Israel to "respect the status quo on the Temple Mount and create a true political horizon that would ensure the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people based on a two-state solution."

Another condemnation came from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The president condemned the Israeli intervention in the al-Aqsa Mosque to the president of the Palestinian Authority, Abu Mazen, and vowed to "oppose" attempts, he said, "to change his status."

Bennett: "Wild Hamas-led incitement campaign"

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett responded by saying: "In the last week we have been waging a wild Hamas incitement campaign. Here is the truth: Israel is doing everything so that everyone can celebrate the holidays safely - Jews, Muslims and Christians. We expect everyone not to join in the lies and certainly not to encourage "Violence against Jews. The State of Israel will continue to preserve our capital, Jerusalem is open to all."
