Russia has launched its offensive in eastern Ukraine after days of preparations to tighten control over the Donbas region, the country's industrial heartland, which was already in the hands of guerrillas controlled by Vladimir Putin's regime before the war.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that his goal is the "total liberation of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics," which make up this region.
