Russia has launched its offensive in eastern Ukraine after days of preparations to tighten control over the Donbas region, the country's industrial heartland, which was already in the hands of guerrillas controlled by Vladimir Putin's regime before the war.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that his goal is the "total liberation of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics," which make up this region.
"We will defend ourselves, we will fight, we will not give anything away," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a speech Monday night.
Russia also launched another ultimatum to the Ukrainian forces that are still resisting in the besieged city of Mariupol, devastated by bombing that in recent hours has spread to strategic points in the rest of the country causing numerous victims.
