Climate protection is also a voluntary task in Munich.

Greens and SPD want to change that.

Because only if climate protection becomes a mandatory task can the federal and state governments provide financial help.

Munich - Climate protection should also become a municipal duty in Munich.

In an application, the Greens and SPD call on Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) to campaign for this goal in the state and federal government.

Munich: Climate protection has so far been a voluntary service by the municipality

Because up to now, climate protection has been a voluntary service by the municipality, i.e. comparable to the promotion of cultural institutions or leisure sports facilities.

Cities like Munich have to finance these tasks themselves.

This is what the Bavarian municipal code prescribes.

Mandatory tasks, however, are co-financed by the Free State, such as the maintenance of roads or daycare centers.

One also speaks of communal services of general interest.

In April last year, the Federal Constitutional Court decided, among other things, that parts of the federal government's previous climate protection policy were unconstitutional.

A corresponding change in the law is expected to take place by the end of this year.

"The Federal Constitutional Court has ruled that climate protection has constitutional status in Germany," says the deputy leader of the Munich Greens, Mona Fuchs.

Munich's Green Vice Mona Fuchs: "Recognize the task of mankind to protect the climate as a mandatory task"

“However, the necessary measures are largely implemented in the municipalities, whose financial performance is often exposed to wildly fluctuating framework conditions.” Cities like Munich have lost enormous tax revenues as a result of the pandemic.

The federal government had to help financially.

"It is time to no longer make the human task of climate protection dependent on the volatile cash situation of the municipalities, but to recognize and promote it as a mandatory task."SASCHA KAROWSKI
