Junts and the leadership of the right

2022-04-20T03:25:36.427Z

For the future of the party, it may be decisive to clarify what it proposes to the Catalan right: if its intention is to continue playing in the ERC field or become the power alternative of the right

Nobody has been surprised that the general secretary of Junts, Jordi Sànchez, has resigned to continue in office as of the party's congress convened for the month of June.

Emerged from the implosion of Convergència Democràtica due to Jordi Pujol's confession in 2014 about his tax evasions, Junts is the political conglomerate that has inherited more options than any other to be the main party of the Catalan right.

This responsibility has been obscured, however, by his dispute with Esquerra Republicana for the leadership of the Catalan independence movement.

This has blurred its political and ideological profile to the point of turning it into a confused amalgamation of sectors with different projects and a battlefield of personalities in permanent conflict.

The confusion is most likely to continue beyond the June congress, whatever the outcome of the fight between Laura Borràs and Jordi Turull.

Junts continues to be the political organization best placed to be the right-wing alternative to the left in Catalonia.

For these purposes, it was always clear, however, that Jordi Sánchez was not the right profile for this challenge.

But, in the same way that it was highly unlikely that Jordi Sánchez could regroup around his leadership the active forces of the Catalan right as CiU and Pujol did in the past, the same can be imagined that it will happen if whoever succeeds him at the head of the party they are Borràs or Turull.

What Pujol, Ramon Trias Fargas, Miquel Roca Junyent and Miquel Coll i Alentorn achieved when they left the Franco dictatorship when they created CiU in 1979 was a true bobbin lace, a formula for the reinvention of the right that allowed them to hegemonize the leadership politics of Catalonia until 2003. There is no space in this article to describe the details of that successful operation, suffice it to remember that they reduced both the UCD and AP to the category of testimonials in Catalonia, as well as later the PP, the vast majority in the rest of the Spain in the field of the right.

Now, after the traumas of the independence adventure, the Catalan right-wing is at a crossroads.

Dispersed on the Catalanist flank, bitterly divided on the Spanish flank,

eight or ten groups dispute the representation of this political space.

It is clear that Jordi Sánchez is not the man for this job.

As clear as he has not even intended.

Are they Carles Puigdemont, Laura Borràs, Jordi Turull?

It does not seem.

They are for other things, like the liberation of Catalonia.

Could it be Carlos Carrizosa, Alejandro Fernández or Ignacio Garriga?

Nor, his objective is not to govern Catalonia but to contribute votes to his Spanish project.

So, if one is on the right, who is going to vote for in Catalonia, with a certain perspective that the vote will serve to win?

The first thing to achieve a political objective is to propose it.

Junts seems to be going to a congress to decide on leadership.

It is something serious, certainly.

But for his future it may be decisive to clarify what he proposes to the Catalan right.

Clarify if your intention is to continue playing in the field of ERC or become the power alternative of the right.
