(CNN Spanish) --

The Colombian National Police reported the capture in Coyoacán, Mexico, of Eduard Fernando Giraldo, alias "Boliqueso".

According to General Jorge Luis Vargas, director of the institution, Giraldo was deported to Colombia to start the extradition process to the United States where, he says, he is required by a New York district court for international cocaine trafficking.

Vargas maintains that alias "Boliqueso" would have been an associate of Dairo Antonio Úsuga, alias "Otoniel", head of the so-called Clan del Golfo and who is about to be extradited to the United States on drug trafficking charges.

Colombian authorities maintain that this is a major blow to drug trafficking and that Giraldo's capture operation was coordinated with his counterparts in Mexico, the United Kingdom and the United States.

General Vargas maintained that Giraldo is being investigated in the United States for allegedly sending tons of cocaine to Central America, the United States and Europe.

In Colombia, the Prosecutor's Office is also investigating him, but there is no formal accusation.

Giraldo, according to the Colombian Police, had already been arrested in 2016 and a judge granted him freedom in 2018.
