The Sandmeir is history.

The Bentenrieder family's popular inn in Hörbach has closed.

This poses major problems for the makers of the Montagsbrettl - which was founded here - and the rifle club.

Hörbach - The inn in the Althegnenberg district of Hörbach has a long history.

Martha and Florian Sandmeir opened it in 1962.

Back then it was open seven days a week, although Florian had a full-time job as a brewer in Augsburg.

In the 1970s, the restaurant developed into a popular stop for day trippers on Lake Ammersee.

And then, in 1975, the Hörbacher Montagsbrettl was launched there – meanwhile the oldest cabaret stage in Bavaria that still exists.

But now the inn is closed – “indefinitely”, as the inn’s homepage says.

The host couple Petra and Konrad Bentenrieder write there: "It just doesn't work anymore."

Sales slump and staff shortage

The couple cites a massive drop in sales due to the corona pandemic combined with a lack of staff as the reason.

One has been fighting for two years with closure, contact restrictions, access regulations and bans on events.

Since May 2021, people have been waiting for support funds that have been applied for, which will probably no longer be paid out.

Unfortunately, the Bentenrieder family could not be reached for a personal statement.

The closure not only has consequences for Hörbach residents and day trippers, but also for the cabaret stage.

After the last live Brettl in February 2020, there was only "Brettl dahoam" with videos and then in July 2021 a summer party in the Sandmeir - "our last event there for the time being", says the new Brettl boss Markus Drexler regretfully.

The board needed a new home.

Montagsbrettl moves to Hattenhofen

And luckily, according to Drexler, they found it: the cabaret stage starts at Gasthof Eberl in Hattenhofen.

In mid-May, Michael Stephan will be a guest there with the reading “Georg Queri and his time”.

Maxi Pongratz performs on June 20th.

Jess Jochimsen and Claudia Pichler have also been announced.

(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular FFB newsletter.)

There will also be a summer festival again - but in Adelshofen, between the town hall and Pschorrstadl.

And the Montagsbrettl members can look forward to a highlight, because the founding father, Toni Drexler, has created something special.

So while the Brettl has found a replacement, the Eichenlaub-Schützen Hörbach still have no alternative.

They too had their home in the inn for many years.

"It's really stupid for us," says Eichenlaub boss Conny Weissbart.

Especially since the marksmen wanted to make up for their 100th anniversary this year, which had to be canceled last year due to the pandemic - with a big festival with a flag consecration.

Eichenlaub shooters without a shooting range

The shooting range of the shooters in Sandmeir was only renewed in 2018.

The club may now be able to find accommodation with Schützen in a neighboring community – at least for a season, Weissbart hopes.

A solution for the future of the Eichenlaub-Schützen could be the old school.

But there are only once Ukraine refugees housed.

And another problem has arisen: the Hörbach maypole - previously always set up in the Sandmeir car park - needs a new place.

And so on Holy Saturday three small sticks were set up at potential locations, each with a plaque on it that called on citizens to think about and decide on a new location.
