Some savings banks will increase their fees from July.

In order to persuade customers to agree to price increases, some credit institutions are getting creative and using ATMs.

Berlin – If banks want to increase fees, they have had a problem since last year: According to a ruling by the Federal Court of Justice, customers must expressly agree to price increases or changes to their bank’s general terms and conditions (GTC) before they can come into effect.

This means that if a bank, such as Sparkasse*, increases the fees, it must obtain the consent of as many customers as possible.

Credit institutions usually send letters for this or inform their customers via a pop-up window in online banking.

Sparkasse: Approval for fee increases at ATMs

According to a report in the

Handelsblatt

, some savings banks have now become creative and are also asking their customers for approval at ATMs.

This means that if you insert your card there to withdraw money, you will first see a window asking you to agree to the new terms and conditions.

According to the Handelsblatt

, customers

can choose between three possible answers: "Agree", "Already done" or "Skip".

According to the report, the speech about the ATMs is used by the Sparkasse Berlin, the second largest German savings bank.

The Sparkasse Mecklenburg-Schwerin and the Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf also ask hesitant customers at the ATM whether they want to agree to the fee increases.

According to the

Handelsblatt

, however, a prerequisite for querying at the ATM is that the savings bank customers have previously received the new general terms and conditions.

Sparkasse: Consumer advocates “do not want to attack”

But aren't customers at the ATM, who perhaps only want to withdraw money under time pressure, taken by surprise?

In any case, consumer advocates do not want to take action against this trick: “We have already seen this with Volksbanks and decided not to attack it,” says Niels Nauhauser from the Baden-Württemberg consumer center to the

Handelsblatt

.

However, the affected customers must have been "really informed about the new terms and conditions and prices".
