33 killed in explosion at Afghanistan mosque

The explosion took place during Friday prayers at a mosque in the Imam Sahib district of Afghanistan. There are dozens of injured.

Thirty- three people have been killed in an explosion at a mosque in Afghanistan's Kunduz province, according to the Taliban.


Among the dead are children, according to Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid, while 43 other people were injured in the blast.

Mujahid said the blast took place during Friday prayers at the Imam Sahib district mosque in Kunduz province.

The incident comes a day after Kunduz and the city of Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan were hit by explosions.

On Tuesday, other explosions hit schools in western Kabul, killing students.

The private Afghan news channel TOLO said the blast targeted the Mawlawi Sekandar mosque.

CNN cannot verify the death toll, but a witness who spoke on condition of anonymity said he saw bodies after the blast.

The source requested anonymity due to the politically sensitive nature of the attacks, and fear of government reprisals.

A series of deadly explosions, mainly targeting the Shiite Hazara community, have rocked several Afghan cities over the past week.

Most of this week's attacks were blamed on the ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K) group affiliated with ISIS and a rival of the Taliban.

So far no one has claimed responsibility for this Friday's explosion.
