41st Bavarian puzzle of the Münchner Merkur together with the Bavarian Palace Administration: The fifth question is about Lake Starnberg.

Lake Starnberg is nestled in the idyllic foothills of the Alps, 25 kilometers south-west of Munich and is managed by the Bavarian Palace Department.

The locals affectionately call the second largest lake in Bavaria “Munich’s bathtub”.

Even the electors found pleasure in the picturesque lake.

Two days of celebrations for the wedding of Prince Elector Karl Albrecht and the Emperor's daughter Maria Amalia, whose 300th anniversary this year marks the couple's 300th anniversary, took the couple to Lake Starnberg.

There they stayed, among other things, on the magnificent ship Bucentoro.

The region between Munich and the Alps was also loved and appreciated by some later prominent personalities.

Many artists like Brahms or Wagner and writers like Oskar Maria Graf or Gustav Meyrink stayed here.

Starnberger See: Munich's bathtub

The lake covers an area of around 57 square kilometers, is around 20 km long and 5 km wide.

Its image is primarily shaped by the moraine hills that border it.

It owes its origin to the last ice age around 20,000 years ago, the so-called Würm ice age, after which the meltwater remained in the former glacier basin.

The surroundings of Lake Starnberg and the lake itself offer a variety of possible leisure activities such as hiking, swimming, diving, cycling and inline skating.

The naturally favorable wind conditions at the foot of the Alps make the lake an ideal sailing area.

At the northern tip of the lake is the district town of Starnberg, the most famous place on the lake.

On the east bank near Berg Castle, near the votive chapel, a wooden cross in the lake shows the spot where King Ludwig II and his doctor Dr.

Gudden died in a way that has not yet been clarified.

At the southern end is Seeshaupt.

The protected area of the Osterseen with its water-rich high moor landscape begins right behind the village.

The best-known places on the west bank are Feldafing, Tutzing and Bernried.

Between Tutzing and Possenhofen lies the Roseninsel, the only island in Lake Starnberg.

King Max II acquired it in 1854, had a casino built on it, a mixture of antique villa, Italian country house and Alpine Swiss house, and laid out a rose garden, which gave the island of Wörth (= beautiful spot in the water) its current name .

King Ludwig II later met here and Sisi, who later became Empress Elisabeth of Austria and daughter of Duke Max in Bavaria, who grew up in nearby Possenhofen Castle.

Near Possenhofen there is also a 46-hectare recreation area built by the state capital of Munich, the so-called paradise.

From here you have the best view of the Rose Island, which is now also managed by the Bavarian Palace Administration.

In addition to the popular large round trip, which takes around three hours and calls at nine shore locations, the Bavarian Lake Shipping Company also offers short round trips between Starnberg, Berg, Leoni and Possenhofen.

The fifth question
