Free bus travel on the North Sea island of Sylt will soon be possible for tourists as part of a pilot project.

Thats how it works.

Westerland – The car traffic on the island of Sylt during the season has not only angered islanders for a long time;

Guests are also increasingly bothered by the masses of cars that populate the island, especially during the summer months.

There are many ideas to at least curb traffic.

For example, the construction of a cable car to Sylt, with which one could get to the island in a relaxed manner instead of by car train.

The mayor of Sylt, Nikolas Häckel, once wanted to ban cars.

The Sylter Verkehrsgesellschaft (SVG) is now starting a pilot project which, if successful, could reduce car traffic.

The idea: free bus travel on Sylt during the 2022 vacation, reports 24hamburg.de.

Free bus travel on Sylt: pilot project makes public transport free for tourists

The pilot project with the somewhat unwieldy name "SyltGO!

Mobility-Partnership" was initiated by the Sylter Verkehrsgesellschaft and the Tourismus-Service of the Sylt municipality of Wenningstedt-Braderup (TSWB) and is scheduled to start at the end of May 2022.

The transport companies announce this on their website.

It's not the only traffic project on the island - meeting zones, which are marked by colorful dots in downtown Westerland on Sylt, are intended to calm the traffic situation.

The latest plan: For tourists who have booked accommodation with one of the participating landlords from the community of Wennigstedt-Braderup north of Westerland, there should be no additional costs for using the SVG buses during the 2022 Sylt vacation, it says continue.

So free bus travel on Sylt!

Interested landlords are called upon to register by September 30 at the latest to participate in the pilot project “SyltGO!

Register for a mobility partnership.

Participation is free until the end of 2022.

A regular bus is on the way on the island of Sylt.

From the end of May, some tourists on the island can use public transport free of charge as part of a pilot project.

This is how the free public transport on Sylt is financed

From January 1st, 2023, the project will also be financed by a fee paid by the landlords.

Overnight guests aged 15 and over are charged €1.50 per night.

A family of four with two adults, one child over the age of 15 and one child under the age of 15 pays 31.50 euros for the public transport ticket for 7 days as part of the pilot project “SyltGO!

Mobility Partnership”.

Even if the offer is initially limited to guests of the Wennigstedt-Braderup municipality, they can use the entire SVG network from List to Hörnum with the ticket.

This fare zone consists of 7 zones and costs EUR 56.00 for one adult per week.

Anyone planning a Sylt holiday for the summer of 2022 will not only get to the island of Sylt particularly cheaply thanks to the 9-euro ticket, but will also be able to use public transport on the island more cheaply than ever before thanks to the project.

Free bus rides on Sylt: Extension to the whole island if the project is successful

The managing director of SVG, Sven Paulsen, was optimistic on his company's website - and also revealed the objective of the free bus rides on Sylt project: "After there have already been various attempts, the guests of the island have been given the use of public transport as an inclusive service to offer a card system, we are pleased to start this pilot project together with Wenningstedt-Braderup," he is quoted as saying on the homepage.

And continues: "The aim is, if the project is successful, to make this offer available on the entire island."
