Thursday, around 7:45 a.m., a neighbor of the couple first discovered the body of the nonagenarian, who was lying on the veranda near a firearm, said in a press release the prosecutor of Avesnes-sur-Helpe, Laurent Dumaine.
The emergency services then found his wife, also deceased, “in a medical bed, inside the home”.
An autopsy of the two bodies “confirms that the deaths are both consecutive to cranial trauma following injuries caused by a shot by firearm at close range”, continues the prosecutor.
None of them, however, “shows any other trace of violence or defense lesions”.

The findings “did not reveal any particular disorder” or “traces of struggle or break-in”, he specifies.
At this stage, “the hypothesis of a homicide followed by a suicide seems the most probable”, estimates Laurent Dumaine.
But it "deserves to be confirmed", in particular by technical investigations on the weapon used, analyzes of samples or hearings of family members.
The investigation is now entrusted to the Research Brigade of Avesnes-sur-Helpe.
