Nuclear phase-out: Our three nuclear weapons against Vladimir Putin

Isar 2, Emsland and Neckarwestheim 2 not only help the climate, but also against the war in Ukraine. It's not too late to stop the nuclear phase-out.

Despite the energy crisis, the federal government is sticking to its plan to phase out nuclear power in a few months.

The last three German piles, which are still supplying around ten million households, should be taken off the grid by New Year's Eve at the latest.

In other words, in the middle of winter, when the demand for electricity is greatest.

The behavior is reminiscent of a starving person who throws away his last piece of bread because it is hard and dry.

You might think it was a bad joke.

Should we buy candles as a precaution?

Even before Putin's attack, there were good reasons to believe that the nuclear phase-out resulting from the Fukushima panic was a mistake.

The climate would be helped more with a rapid exit from coal.

And whether wind and sun are sufficient to supply an industrial country with electricity day and night has not yet been decided.

Now that we also have to save on Russian gas, the nuclear phase-out seems completely out of date.

Belgium has announced that it will postpone its exit planned for 2025 by ten years.

With Russia's attack, the situation must be fundamentally reassessed, said Belgium's green energy minister.

France, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Poland want to build new reactors.

A few weeks ago it looked as if things were moving in Germany too.

Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck said about a possible extension of the term that he "would not ideologically resist it".

But a little later, Habeck and his Green party friend Steffi Lemke from the environment department presented an "approval report" according to which the continued operation of the nuclear power plants could only make a limited contribution to the current energy crisis.

And so the Greens' nuclear debate ended before it had even begun.

Habeck flew to Qatar and bowed to the Emir to beg for liquid gas.

Now that the Greens have already made a 180-degree turn in armaments policy, a change of course on the nuclear issue would obviously be too much to ask.

I believe that the government misjudges the mood of the population.

Isar 2, Emsland and Neckarwestheim 2, our last three reactors, are not only an answer to climate change, but also three weapons against Putin.

According to an Allensbach survey for the "FAZ", 57 percent are now in favor of leaving the remaining nuclear power plants connected to the grid beyond the end of the year.

According to a Forsa survey for RTL, as many as 67 percent are in favor of reconsidering the nuclear phase-out schedule.

At Stadtwerke München, which owns a quarter of the Isar 2 nuclear power plant, the technical director explained at the beginning of the month how the exit could be postponed.

The coming winter is not a problem.

For later you can order new fuel rods in Sweden.

However, the federal government must make a decision by the end of May, otherwise it will be too late.

The government has less than six weeks to come to its senses.
