Our review of Bartleby my brother: Daniel Pennac passes on the boards

CRITICISM - The author goes in search of his missing brother. He mixes one of his texts with that of Melville at the Théâtre du Rond-Point.

We did not go to see

Bartleby my brother

for the performance of the actors but to listen to the text by Daniel Pennac, a theatrical adaptation of My brother, a story in which the author “

mixed (t) (s) his memories of Bernard, ( s)on missing brother, to large excerpts from

Melville

's Bartleby

".

The play directed by Clara Bauer is constructed from three overlapping and interlocking points of view.

The first is the making of a film based on the Melville short story;

the second plunges us into the life of this shoot (the film within the film);

finally the third - which will be described as "out of time" - retraces the fragmented history of the relationship between Daniel Pennac and his deceased brother Bernard.

The whole thing would be an attempt at mourning and the inevitably vain effort to unravel the mystery of the famous Bartleby, this funny individual who has only one sentence in his mouth: “

I would rather not

”.
