With the canonization of Sister Faustina on April 30, 2000, devotion to Christ as the King of Mercy greatly increased.

A copy of Adolf Hyla's painting, made by Theodora Handiak-Christophe, now has a permanent place in the Maria Egg pilgrimage church in Peiting.

Peiting

– The Peiting-Hohenpeißenberg parish association is celebrating a big day on this Sunday of Mercy, April 24th: For the first time since the Corona pandemic, the faithful will meet again at 7.30 p.m. in the parish church of St. Michael for the traditional supplication to Maria unter der Egg.

There, during the Eucharistic service, the image donated by the St. Michael's Brotherhood is blessed and given a worthy place on the south side of the church under the gallery.

The pilgrimage to the Blessed Mother dates back to the middle of the 17th century, as evidenced by old votive tablets.

It is also pleasing that to this day the rosary is prayed there every day (in summer at 6 p.m.).

The poor school sister Maria Bonaventura Fink, who died 100 years ago after a holy life, had a close relationship with Maria (we reported).

Worship has greatly increased

In addition to Mary, the Mother of God, the faithful also turned to Holy Brother Konrad and Holy Creszentia von Kaufbeuren in the course of time.

The reliefs, made by the Peitingen wood sculptor Lorenz Buchner, have stood on the side altars since the general renovation in 1935/36.

In the past two decades, the devotion to the Merciful Jesus has increased steadily.

On March 5, 2011, in bright sunshine, the shrine to the Merciful Jesus was blessed by Pastor Helmut Kraus on the Bühlach with a large participation of the faithful population.

The fair at the Herz-Jesu-Festival takes place there every year in June.

In addition, believers who trust in God pray the “Mercy Rosary” in the Maria Egg pilgrimage church.

A matter of the heart for the brotherhood and the artist

It was therefore a matter close to the heart of the St. Michael's Brotherhood to erect a portrait there based on the mystical experience of Sister Faustina.

For the Peitingen artist Theodora Handiak-Christophe, herself a great admirer of the Rosary of Mercy, a point of honor.

She was happy to make a copy of the original and donated it to the St. Michael's Brotherhood.

Markus Schleich (carpentry Rößle) was also happy to donate the wooden frame.

A filigree work with respectful fluting on the edge.

Church curator Erwin Walk and Mesner Markus Jocher were also impressed by the picture, and in consultation with the art department of the diocese they chose a worthy place for it.

Jesus spoke to Sister Faustina

In order to spread the “message of divine mercy”, Jesus asked Sister Faustina in Płock in 1931: “Draw a picture of me as you see me and write underneath it: Jesus, I trust in you!

And spread it around the world to be admired!” Her vision was artistically implemented three times in total, with Adolf Hyla's picture gaining the greatest popularity and being distributed in countless copies on all continents worldwide.

The Polish sister Maria Faustina Kowalska (1905 to 1938) is often referred to as the "apostle of God's mercy" because of her spiritual diary.

In it she recorded her mystical experiences from 1931 until her death.

So she saw Jesus in a large white robe.

One hand was raised in blessing, the other touched the robe on the chest.

Two great rays emanated from the opening of the robe on the chest, one red and one paler.

These rays indicate the blood and water that flowed out of its open side on the cross.

Memory of John Paul II

In the visions, Jesus spoke to Faustina about his boundless mercy: “I promise that the soul that worships this image will not perish.

I also promise, already here on earth, victory over enemies, especially in the hour of death.”

Following an inner inspiration, Faustina prayed the Rosary of Divine Mercy for the first time in 1935.

A great admirer of Faustina was Karol Wojtyla.

As Archbishop of Kraków, he initiated her beatification process at the diocesan level in 1965 and, as Pope John Paul II, wrote an encyclical on divine mercy for the first time in church history in 1980.

In 1993 he beatified Faustina and canonized her on April 30, 2000.

On this day, Pope John Paul II also stipulated that the Sunday after Easter should be celebrated as Mercy Sunday in the Roman Catholic Church.
