Addis Ababa-SANA
Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia Yevgeny Teryukhin confirmed that the Russian embassy in Addis Ababa does not recruit any volunteers to fight in the ranks of the Russian army, expressing his thanks to everyone who expressed their readiness to support the Russian army.
Commenting on pictures of columns of Ethiopians wishing to join the Russian forces in front of the Moscow embassy in Addis Ababa, Teryukhin said in an interview with Rossiya 24 channel: There have been friendly relations between Russia and Ethiopia for decades, as Russia opened its military mission in this country in the late nineteenth century to support the Ethiopians in their struggle It also supported Ethiopia in the most difficult moments of its history and all of this formed a good ground for the warm and fraternal sentiments felt by ordinary citizens and representatives of the Ethiopian leadership towards Russia.
Teryukhin explained that since the beginning of the Russian military operation in Ukraine, many Ethiopians have contacted the embassy in order to express their solidarity with Moscow, and many of them come daily to it to express their readiness to help Russia in its operation, not with words but also with deeds.
"The embassy, as a diplomatic mission, does not have the right and opportunity, according to its status, to recruit citizens of another country into the ranks of its army, as this is contrary to the laws of Russia, Ethiopia and the Geneva Convention on Diplomatic Relations," Teryukhin added.
