One would like to know what secrets the SPD greats Gerhard Schröder and Sigmar Gabriel had to discuss this week - something that was so explosive that a phone call was out of the question, because then you could have told the foreign secret services listening in directly .

The assumption that the conversation in Schröder's house could also have been about the increasingly dangerous scandal of the common party and Russia friend Manuela Schwesig is obvious.

The abyss into which the republic looks on the coast is yawning ever deeper: the Gazprom group, which Schröder helped to steer (and thus the Kremlin), sponsored a highly dubious state-owned "Climate and Environmental Foundation" in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with 20 million euros.

There were many useful Kremlin idiots in Germany, and not only in the SPD.

But a prime minister who let himself be remotely controlled by Putin so directly, resorted to tricky cover-up tactics and violated German security interests like Schwesig, that was a stroke of luck even for Putin, who was well wired in German politics.

It goes without saying that Gazprom's EUR 20 million donation to the foundation should have been taxed.

But the tax returns, as it is now said in Schwerin, cannot be found.

Now Schwesig is glued to her chair and doesn't want to be a perpetrator but an unsuspecting victim.

But her resignation is overdue.

The shadow that her fall casts over the chancellor and his SPD, which is fatally linked to Putin's Russia, grows longer by the day.

The refusal of the chancellor and the SPD to clean out this Augean stable is tarnishing Germany's reputation with its partners.
