Afghanistan has been rocked by attacks for days. On Friday, 33 people are said to have died in a mosque, 43 were injured according to the Taliban, including children.

An explosion at a mosque in northern Afghanistan has killed more than 30 people.

Taliban government spokesman Sabiullah Mujahid spoke of 33 dead and 43 injured on Friday.

Children are also among the victims.

The explosion at the Maulawi Sikandar Mosque in Kunduz province happened during Friday prayers.

The mosque also has a religious school.

According to local representatives, the attack was aimed at a Sufi mosque, which jihadist groups regard as heretics.

No group initially claimed responsibility for the attack.

After the attack, the Maulawi Sikandar Mosque presented a "horrible picture," according to a local shopkeeper.

"Everyone who prayed in the mosque was either injured or killed," he told AFP.

One side of the church was completely destroyed, according to an AFP correspondent.

Attacks have recently increased again

According to Afghan media reports, there were also explosions in other cities.

Dozens of people were killed and wounded in nationwide attacks on Thursday.

The terrorist militia "Islamic State" (IS) claimed responsibility for the largest attack in the city of the former German army base Mazar-i-Scharif.

According to the Taliban authorities, the "mastermind" behind the attack on the mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif has now been arrested.

The alleged IS fighter Abdul Hamid Sangarjar planned the attack, said the police spokesman for the province of Balch, Asif Wasiri.

The number of attacks in Afghanistan has recently increased again.

The IS claims a large part for itself, which wants to establish a dominion, especially in the east and in areas of neighboring Pakistan.

Once declared defeated, IS is still active today and regularly carries out attacks against Shiites and the Taliban.

The militant Islamist group has been in power again since August 2021.
