German public figures have called on Chancellor Olaf Scholz to halt arms supplies to Ukraine because they are prolonging the conflict and not conducive to a peaceful diplomatic settlement.
According to the German newspaper, Berliner Zeitung, 18 people, including Deputy Speaker of the German Parliament, Ante Vollmer, former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, Hans-Christoph von Sponeck, professors, doctors of science, musicians and scientists signed a letter addressed to Schulz and said, "By providing weapons, Germany and other NATO countries made themselves by virtue of The de facto party to the conflict and thus Ukraine has also become a battleground for the confrontation between NATO and Russia over the security system in Europe, which has been escalating for years.
The letter pointed out that Western countries should take into account Moscow's interests. Moreover, NATO member states should present themselves proposals on the security of Russia and its neighboring countries, adding, "We call on the German government, European Union countries and NATO to stop supplying troops We call on the Ukrainian government in Kyiv to stop the fighting and to talk about the Moscow proposals, which have already been discussed and give a real opportunity to do so.”
Russia has repeatedly emphasized that the West is trying to prolong the conflict in Ukraine by providing arms shipments to its government and has warned that these shipments will become legitimate targets for its forces.
