Klettham Primary School can now officially call itself “School without Racism – School with Courage”.

Klettham

– Klettham Primary School has been officially included in the “School Without Racism – School With Courage” network and is allowed to use the associated logo.

Musician Andi Starek from Eichenried and children's sports trainer Andrea Merkert, who are both behind the "Schlawindl Move" project, have taken on the sponsorship.

"It was my dearest wish that we improve our school climate in general, that we get a better sense of community, a good sense of togetherness, and that there is no xenophobia at our school," reports Ingeborg Bruns, principal of the Klettham primary school.

The idea of applying to be included in the network goes back two years, but Corona slowed down the project.

Klettham elementary school had applied for titles before the pandemic

"We applied before the pandemic and started to meet the conditions," Bruns told our newspaper.

These conditions include that at least 70 percent of all members of the school community, from the students to the housekeeping staff, sign a commitment to take consistent action against exclusion and discrimination, to intervene in conflicts and to be willing to carry out regular project days on the subject.

"We show attitude, we become active, and we all take care of a respectful, peaceful coexistence within the school community, which we also show to the outside world," explains Bruns.

Starek was won as a godfather.

"Because of his commitment to the Orienthelfer, he is predestined for this and he immediately accepted because he is very connected to our school," says Bruns.

The second godmother is Merkert, who launched the "Schlawindl Move" movement project with Starek, and who is also a school assistant and full-time employee in Klettham.

Andi Starek is not only godfather on paper

For Starek it is the fourth sponsorship, among other things he has taken over this office for his home elementary school Moosinning;

nevertheless he did not hesitate here either.

"It's important to me to do projects with the schools, to take care of them." The school also appreciates that.

“Andi Starek is not a godfather on paper, he lives it with us.

We're proud of that," says Bruns.

Although the school had met all the conditions before the pandemic, the official award ceremony could only take place now.

The school song was sung, and as a highlight together with the children Starek's song "We don't stand for racism".

Ron Otto, regional coordinator for Upper Bavaria, was connected via video.

Mayor Max Gotz and school board member Stephan Rettig were there live, as well as all class representatives and their deputies.

Over 3000 schools already have the title

"Everyone else was in the classroom with their teacher, where the ceremony was broadcast live so that everyone could experience this wonderful moment," reports Bruns and is proud: "There are more than 3,000 'schools without racism - schools with courage' in Germany , and we are one of them now.” The sign has already been received, the official certificate will come by post.

It is important to Bruns to emphasize that this is not an award for what has already been achieved.

“It is rather a self-commitment for the present and the future.

We have to get going now.” Actions and projects should take place regularly for this purpose, also with the support of the sponsors.

It would be Brun's wish to set up an anti-racism working group at the school, which she would like to lead herself.

"We are also in the process of installing a class council and our school social worker has set up mediators who are now being trained."

Children from 26 nations attend the school

The school community also meets once a month in the foyer, and one class always prepares something for this – a reading, a poem or a song.

"The children are very enthusiastic about it," assures the principal.

Girls and boys from 26 nations are currently attending the school.

In addition, there is the welcome group, in which ten refugee children from Ukraine are currently being taught by remedial teacher Renate Eßbaumer and a Ukrainian teacher.
