● DMA, a new weapon against Gafam

The Digital Markets Act (DMA) is the twin legislation of the Digital Services Act.

Its formal adoption is expected by the end of the year, after the agreement between institutions finalized last March.

With the DMA, the European Union acknowledges the failure of its anti-competition investigations: it decides to regulate the actions of the Internet giants and to repress anti-competitive practices.

The text sets around twenty rules for “gatekeepers” (access controllers), such as Gafam or the powerful European (Booking) and Chinese (AliExpress or TikTok) groups.

To curb targeted advertising, the text imposes a ban on cross-referencing, without their consent, the personal data of users using several services on the same platform.

In addition, users must be able to delete any pre-installed application and install all those from third-party stores.
