Help in times of crisis - that is the goal of the new strategic partnership between Hamburg and Kyiv.

During a live broadcast in the town hall, Kiev's mayor Vitali Klitschko gave an insight into the situation in his country and asked for support.

Hamburg – Hamburg's Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) and Kiev's Mayor Vitali Klitschko have agreed on a strategic partnership between their cities in view of Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine.

Hamburg and Kyiv want to support each other in times of crisis.

The two politicians signed the "Pact for Solidarity and Future" on Sunday in Hamburg and in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.

Klitschko was connected live via video to the Hanseatic city's town hall.

He is very grateful to the city of Hamburg for the help, he said.

“We urgently need this support.

Because Ukrainians are fighting today for their country, their free will, their peace and all of Europe!”

At the same time, both mayors appealed to the people, companies and institutions in their cities to support the pact.

The first priority is humanitarian aid for the time of the acute crisis and for the day when reconstruction in Ukraine can begin.

The Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, the #WeAreAllUkrainians initiative and the Hanseatic Help association are all involved.

"Hamburg's economy stands firmly and in solidarity with Ukraine.

The numerous campaigns and the extraordinary commitment of many companies and their employees are impressive," said Norbert Aust, President of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce.

In a second phase of the pact, economic, cultural and social relations are to be strengthened.

"The pact for solidarity and future is a sign against Russia's war of aggression and for our solidarity with Ukraine," said Tschentscher.

As the capital and seat of government of Ukraine, Kyiv is of particular importance in the resistance against Russian aggression and in the fight for peace and freedom in Europe.

Thanks to the good contacts with the Klitschkos, the city can "help in a targeted manner and respond flexibly to the most urgent needs".

Everything that is currently happening in Ukraine is a great tragedy, said Klitschko in the video switch.

"The war makes no sense." Everything must be done to bring about peace as quickly as possible.

The brothers Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko have had close ties to Hamburg for many years.

They started their world boxing careers from the Hanseatic city.

Vitali Klitschko has been mayor of Kyiv since 2014.

He described Hamburg as his second home on Sunday.

His wife Natalia recently campaigned for peace in and more support for Ukraine at demonstrations and events in Hamburg.
