speed limit?
According to Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP), this is not possible – the corresponding signs would be missing.
The German environmental aid is therefore making an offer.
Cologne/Radolfzell – Since the outbreak of the Ukraine war, fuel prices have risen sharply.
In order to save money, some motorists drive a little slower than usual on the autobahn. But in the public debate, various associations are going even further and are debating a general speed limit for Germany.
Speed limit: German environmental aid calls for a maximum of 100 km/h on motorways
The German Environmental Aid has clearly spoken out in favor of a speed limit.
A press release states: “With a speed of 100 km/h on the motorway, 80 km/h outside of town and 30 km/h in town, we can immediately save more than 9 million tons of CO2 per year.
In total, that would be up to 3.7 billion liters of petrol and diesel that could be saved each year.
With the introduction of a speed limit, we could also reduce our dependency on imports from Russia starting tomorrow.”
In the Sunday edition of the RTL program
Stern TV
, the head of communications at Deutsche Umwelthilfe, Mathias Walter, defended this demand.
He names three advantages of 100 km/h on the Autobahn: lower fuel consumption, less pollution and fewer accidents.
Speed limit: Greens and SPD politicians are in favor of it
In politics, however, there is still disagreement about the speed limit.
A large part of the traffic light coalition spoke out in favor of a limit.
Baden-Württemberg's Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann from the Greens told the
Tagesspiegel
that a speed limit is an effective way of saving energy.
Thomas Losse-Müller, state chairman of the SPD in Schleswig-Holstein, also spoke out in favor of a speed limit given the dependency on Russian energy.
But the FDP counters this and refers to the coalition agreement, which states that there will be no general speed limit.
Speed limit: German environmental aid could provide traffic signs
A temporary limit was therefore also discussed, but Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) also rejected this proposal.
However, the reason for this sounds bizarre.
In an interview with the
Hamburger Morgenpost
, he claimed that there were not enough traffic signs for this.

This argument may no longer be particularly convincing.
Because Walter from the environmental aid made
an offer to the transport minister at
Stern TV
.
He explained that environmental aid had already offered to put up the necessary signs.
