This is how supporters of French President Emmanuel Macron reacted to the results of the presidential elections on Sunday evening.

Macron is re-elected.

He received 58.6 percent of the votes.

His competitor in the runoff, the right-wing nationalist Marine Le Pen, voted 41.4 percent.

Emmanuel Macron, French President:

"First of all: Thank you!"

Macron will lead France for another five years.

It is the first time since Jacques Chirac was re-elected twenty years ago that a French president has been able to defend his office.

At that time, Chirac defeated Marine Le Pen's father Jean-Marie in the run-off and won 82 percent of the votes.

Macron is far from that with almost 59 percent.

In his speech on the evening of the election, he emphasized all the more clearly that he wanted to be president of all French people.

Emmanuel Macron, French President:

“I also think of everyone who voted for Madame Le Pen.

I know they are disappointed today.

(crowd boos) No, don't boo anyone.

I asked you from the start not to boo anyone."

There was also initial booing in Marine Le Pen's camp when the first projections showed Macron's unassailable lead.

But when the candidate entered the stage, the mood quickly turned to jubilation about the historically best result for the French right.

Marine Le Pen, Presidential candidate:

»I will continue my commitment to France and the French people.

With energy, perseverance and the affection you have come to expect from me.«

Macron not only has opponents in the right camp.

Many, especially young French people, see him as a representative of neoliberal politics that makes the rich richer and the poor poorer.

There were riots during protests against his re-election.

Firecrackers were thrown at police cars in Lyon.

The police used tear gas.

Macron stressed that he knew that many only voted for him to prevent Le Pen.

He promised all of them that he would adapt his policy to their needs.

Emmanuel Macron, French President:

“This new era will not be the continuation of the five years before.

It's the collective invention of a revised method for five better years.

I am at the service of the country – and of our youth.«

Exactly what he means by this "revised method" remains to be seen.

And the election campaign continues.

Parliamentary elections are due in June.
